Y2K Song

about

so, i know it's a little awkward for me to be releasing a song about "the apocalypse" during a global meltdown. i wrote this song in 2019--a year when society seemed less on the brink of total collapse, which is not something i thought i could possibly wind up saying of that time.

still, i think the message holds up. the end may be nigh, but queer people are not its harbingers. our capitalist oppressors are. not much of a twist when you think about it.

lyrics

I remember late December, 1999
the world was supposed to crumble, all of the clocks were supposed to unwind
a lot of mothers and fathers bought up all the candles and drew the blinds
cause they thought, "this is it this time
and it's gonna be the end of time"

what do people do when they think they know something's out of control?
some of them freak out the neighbors over the safety of their souls
some of them break out the cardboard and markers, and some of them hide like moles
when they think, "this is it this time
and it's gonna be the end of time"

we are not the apocalypse for you
we are not destructive, glitched, or new
so take a glass of champagne, it could be a new year for you too
and raise your glass to our survival

since 1999, there've been 20 new year's days
and the world has ended several times in different ways
but my mother and father still have all their candles tucked away
cause it wasn't the end that time
it wasn't what they thought that time

we are not the apocalypse for you
we are not destructive, glitched, or new
so take a glass of champagne, it could be a new year for you too
and raise your glass to our survival
raise your glass to our survival
raise your glass to our survival
